TruGrid recently wrapped up three energy storage projects in Texas, each one delivered ahead of schedule and within budget. That’s something to celebrate for any engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company—especially when dealing with tight timelines, unpredictable weather, and complex logistics.

We sat down with Josh Richardson, TruGrid’s Chief Operating Officer, to talk about what made these projects successful, how the team overcame challenges, and what it means for the future of project execution at TruGrid.

Q: TruGrid recently delivered three energy storage projects ahead of schedule and within budget. If you had to sum up how we did that in one word, what would you say?

Collaboration. To me, collaboration is teamwork that’s optimized. It’s about checking egos at the door and focusing on what’s best for the project. That mindset drove everything in these projects, all the way from early planning through final execution. Our team reached their collective potential because they stayed connected and solution-focused (which is a TruGrid value), even when things got tough.

Q: Can you give us a sense of what made this portfolio of projects unique?

What’s remarkable is that instead of walking away with a long list of lessons learned, we came out of these projects with a list of things we want to repeat. That’s exciting.

Q: What were the biggest challenges your team faced during execution, and how did they overcome them?

Two big ones: supply chain and weather.

We faced heavy delays getting critical parts, but our supply chain team worked side by side with construction to find solutions in real time. Then there was the rain! Record-setting storms across Texas disrupted work on a regular basis.

Because we had a solid plan, the team stayed flexible. They remained patient, kept safety at the forefront and pushed through with grit and smart decision-making. Our team made personal sacrifices to keep these projects on track. They gave up weekends, stayed longer on site, and did whatever it took to get the job done. We have an incredible team, and I’m truly thankful for all their hard work.

Q: What allowed these projects to finish ahead of schedule despite those challenges?

They pushed themselves to find better ways of working. That meant showing up early, working weekends, and staying laser-focused on the schedule. When storms rolled through, they weren’t starting from scratch. They had already protected the site, safeguarded progress and were ready to ramp up again as soon as the weather cleared. 

It’s not just about working hard. It’s about being smart with your work, staying aligned, and never losing sight of the end goal. 

Q: From your perspective, what are the most common reasons energy storage or solar projects are delayed across the industry?

Lack of alignment and preparation.

Too often, different stakeholders are chasing different goals. At TruGrid, we believe every project needs a shared vision. That means working closely with the client to understand their priorities and staying aligned from day one.

Q: What makes TruGrid different when it comes to managing risk and avoiding delays?

We plan. A goal without a plan is just a wish. Our rigorous pre-construction process allows us to anticipate what we can and be ready to respond to what we can’t. That preparation is a major reason why we show up ready to meet our goals.

Q: What processes or tools does the team use to improve scheduling, tracking or communication on projects?

One of our most effective tools is our daily Plan of the Day meeting. 

Every morning, our supervisors, subcontractors, and internal teams meet to align on what was done yesterday, what’s happening today, and what’s coming next. It creates transparency and gives everyone from field crews to clients confidence in the schedule. 

These small daily touchpoints lead to big-picture progress. 

Q: How do you approach project planning from day one to set the team up for success?

We start before day one.

Our Phase Gate process begins before we even submit a proposal. We track budgets, resources, and timelines every step of the way, making sure everything is aligned before boots ever hit the ground.

Q: How does strong collaboration between preconstruction, construction, and operations & maintenance impact a project’s success?

Each group is a stakeholder in the outcome.

When they hold each other accountable, support one another, and work together through transitions, the result is a seamless experience for the client.

Q: How do you keep your teams motivated during fast-paced, complex projects?

We focus on winning the day. 

Every day is a new chance to show up and do your best. Even when we hit setbacks, we break it down into small wins and recover the schedule step by step. 

A successful project is built on thousands of small wins: every safety check, every problem solved, every piece of work done right. 

Q: What trends are you seeing in the EPC space that could impact project delivery in the next three to five years?

Technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are already making an impact. And it’s only going to grow. 

Early adopters of robotics, automation, and AI-driven tools will be more efficient, safer, and better equipped to deliver in extreme conditions. At TruGrid, we’re embracing change and staying curious. 

What worked five years ago won’t get us where we need to go next. We’re building for the future, not the past.
